My 1st Year of Blogging: 5 Important Lessons & Life Lessons I learned

Friends, today is a special post that I am excited to share because I am celebrating my 1st year of blogging. My blog turns one tomorrow February 5th. Today’s post is not just for bloggers or new bloggers but any of these principles can also be applied to life. Here are lesson from my 1st year of blogging straight from my heart.

Have Fun with Blogging

1. Have Fun.

One of the most obvious but overlooked concepts about blogging is to have fun. It can be a challenge to get your blog noticed with so many blogs out there. Blogging can be a lot of work and time. But if you internalize that too much, blogging can become a chore and you can burn out easily. Sure we all have those times as bloggers where we are unmotivated or just get a writing block. But if blogging is a consistent drain and frustration, maybe take a step back. Honestly there is no shame in that. Even in my 1st year of blogging, I have already done that.

Important Blogging Lesson is to Have Fun

Keep the fun in blogging. Don’t take yourself too seriously. You know how movies or TV shows have bloopers? I have plenty of blogger bloopers friends . Weather happens, hair gets stuck in your lip gloss only to smear all over your face when you move your hair, props and outfits items get forgotten at home for photoshoots, links don’t work, outfits sell out before you post, and oh yeah the lighting isn’t always just right but the show must go on. That is just a short list lol. Nothing is perfect in life but you can embrace the imperfections. Blogging has taught me to laugh a whole lot more at the craziness of just life and have a whole lot of fun.

2. Don’t be afraid to take risks.

First, just starting a blog is risky. It is scary enough to put yourself out there and try something completely new that you have not done before. Blogging is a whole world in itself and its hard work to build a brand from the ground up. But taking that first step and starting a blog already shows that you do not have a lack of courage.

Take Risks with Blogging

Next, the business side of blogging can be risky. It can be a challenge to reach out to brands or negotiate deals with brands that have reached out to you. Sometimes you will get a no and sometimes you will get a yes but it is all part of the process.  Also stick up for yourself if a brand is trying to take advantage of you. Don’t be afraid to pass up on something or back out of a deal that isn’t right. The truth of the matter is that you will never know until you try. Risks can be very rewarding.

Learning and Growing with Blogging

3. Always be open to learning and growing.

This point tallies off the previous point in that blogging is full of risks but that is a part of learning and growing. Can I tell you a really big truth about blogging? Blogging is a whole lot of experimenting. It is a whole lot of finding out what works and what doesn’t. In addition to, it’s a whole of finding out what works and what doesn’t work for your brand and your blog.

Always be Open to Learning and Growing

There are some universal truths or methods that do or don’t work for most any blogger. Find out what works for you which takes time. There are no short cuts to the time and work it takes to experiment a good system. “The more we are willing to pull up our chairs to learn at the desk of life, the more we will get somewhere.” That “somewhere” looks different for each person’s journey. I still believe in that.

Signature Pose for Blogging

4. Have a signature something.

What is cool and unique about you? What is cool and unique about your blog? The answer to those questions should tie together. Do you have artistic qualities and therefore love to create different makeup looks? Do you thrive on creating new things and therefore have a knack for making new recipes? Does your heart sing to rally for causes and helping others, therefore you center your blog on charities and campaigns?

If your blog is a fashion or style blog, do you have signature piece that consistently represents you and your brand? Do you have a signature pose that you just ease into and love? I have a signature pose that I have used a lot in pictures. It is very natural for me because I am a former dancer and I almost forget I am doing it sometimes. I somehow always kick up my heels and I love that it reminds me to point 1 have fun. Rock out whatever your signature  is even if it’s a simple thing.

5. Keep sharing your story.

I was 15 years old when I said I would have a website someday. Blogging wasn’t a thing at that point and I had no idea if that idea would happen. I sure did drag my feet on starting one but finally while finishing up grad school last spring, I started one. The original idea was to use my blog as a platform to write about things on my heart and things I had gone through good and bad to help others. That idea is still true but of course I added other elements like fashion and travel. My reasons why I have passion for blogging is something I hope to say with more than words. My blogging journey and story will hopefully continue on for years to come.

My 1st Year of Blogging

How did you start your blog and why?  Maybe a life event happened or you saw a need for something. It could be that you just wanted to have fun and try something new. No matter what your story is or how it unfolding, it matters.

Don’t ever change yourself to fit another story. Blogs come and go sometimes but who you are as a person and your story should never fade.

Thank you for being a part of my story and being a friend. I am truly grateful for your support. Fun Slideshow below 🙂

  1. You are so cute!! I am loving the dress. And those SHOES! Thanks for these lessons. I’ve been following you since the beginning and I see how it has evolved over the year, but it has always been you and I love that. Similar to you, I had always wanted to start a blog and couldn’t figure out what to blog about. Then, I started doing OOTD pics on IG and ended up writing a book on the captions so decided to branch out into a blog. I never dreamed that I’d be plastering my face all over the internet. LOL! But I agree with you, it has definitely been a learn-as-you-go and trial and error kind of journey, but it has been fun! Congrats on one year and I look forward to the next year. xo

  2. I love this post!! My blog has been around for about a year – I hear you on everything! Sometimes you do have to just step away and take a break. I look forward to following your blog/reading more posts!
