Golden Colorado

Golden Colorado

I am excited to share my fall in Colorado weekend getaway recap. In today’s post I am sharing my recommendations, honest feedback, and tips from my weekend in 3 different cities in Colorado.

Last weekend I visited Colorado for the first time. One of my dear friends that I met through blogging lives in Denver. Even though she lives in Colorado, she had never stayed in overnight in other cities in Colorado only driven through. Since I have been wanting to visit Colorado for a while, I reached out to my friend. We decided to plan a little weekend getaway staying in Vail. It was a trip that I needed to get away and clear my head after going through tough times with my family including my grandpop passing away and attending the funeral just days before my Colorado trip. So this trip to Colorado was therapeutic and wonderful. I would love to go back. Below are the 3 cities we visited and all my feedback.

Golden, Colorado was my first destination. I drove in from Omaha, Nebraska and needed to stay overnight closer to Denver so my friend could meet up with me the next day. Golden is underrated and I can’t believe I didn’t hear about it till I started researching. I was blown away at how lovely and quaint it is. It is a beautiful city and had some of the most “golden” (pun intended) views I saw in Colorado. Fall foliage was all around and the fall spirit was alive. I stayed at a beautiful Bed and Breakfast called The Dove Inn right in the heart of Golden. It is a darling home that was built in the 1800’s. It has been refurbished into a wonderful bed and breakfast place to stay that is absolutely inviting.  Each room is decorated a bit different with classy décor and the downstairs area is stunning. They have a kitchen where you can bring your own food or make something. It is a laid-back atmosphere. There aren’t too many rooms, so it is quiet. The staff lets you know about check in a few hours before your arrival with a code for the door and a code for your room. I felt safe staying there by myself. I cannot recommend The Dove Inn enough. I am thankful they were generous to cover my stay on the house. This did not impact my review I promise. I had already researched The Dove Inn ahead of but it’s even better in person.

Golden is a destination outside of Denver that I would recommend anyone stopping by and or staying. There is a bunch to do like rides for the kids and tons of cute local shops. Check out this link for all of the things to do in Golden. The restaurants in the area all have amazing reviews. I ate brunch at Sassafras. It was delicious. The potato casserole was yummy and my Snickerdoodle Latte was the bomb. Additionally, I went to the Colorado Plus 49 Cider and Pub. It had rave reviews and it did not disappoint. The food was great and the cider is incredible. I had the Black Cherry Cider and even my friend had some. It is a must stop in Golden. One activity we wanted to do close to Golden was the train ride in Georgetown. We ran out of time but I would recommend a train ride. I went on one in the Smoky Mountains and loved it.

Vail Colorado is the epitome of winter destination when it comes to ski season. I have heard so many great things about Vail. We stayed directly in Vail Village at the Christiana at Vail. It was a nice and clean place to stay but very basic. Since the hotel was in the village, we could walk to the restaurants, shops, and even some trails from there.

Vail was quiet because it was a combination of being off season and COVID. Unfortunately, lots of activities and even some restaurants were closed so there wasn’t a lot to do. We wanted to take the Gondola ride over the mountains but that was closed. Vail Village is nice but I was a bit underwhelmed to be honest. The village was not that big and the many restaurants we went had very average food. We made the best of it and walked all around. We stopped at the Rocky Mountains Chocolate Factory which they have locations across the country specially in touristic areas like Vail. The chocolate was incredible and they have anything you could want.

As far as hiking, I would recommend the All Trails app. My friend is not much into hiking lol so we did one right around the Vail Village area. There are some stunning ones not too far from Vail village within 30- or 40-minute drives so check out that app. The weather in Vail was cooler going down to the 30’s.  Colorado got an early winter this year so much of the fall foliage wasn’t there. Had I come a week or 2 earlier, it would have been more fall colors but that’s the nature of fall. Sometimes it is tricky to catch fall foliage at its peak anywhere you go to and can vary from year to year. Overall, I would say to visit during peak season which is winter/ski season if you want the full experience of Vail. But it you want something slow paced and budget friendly then go to Vail off season.

Breckenridge Colorado

Breckenridge Colorado in the Fall

Breckenridge, Colorado was like being in the middle of a postcard. It was absolutely stunning and charming. Breckenridge sits right in the heart of the White National River Forest and is close to Frisco.  We spent half a day in Breckenridge before I headed out for the long drive back to Texas. It is a lovely area that feels like steeping back into the early 1900’s when people would go to the country store and pick up feed for their farm and grain or go to a local pub for town gossip. Every building, restaurant, and shop had tons of character and was super cute.

The area was full of activity with live music and tons of photo opportunities. For food, we wanted to eat at the Columbine Café which has a crazy amount of positive reviews but it was a vey long wait so we ate at the Cabin Coffee Co. It was a great breakfast but of course the coffee is center stage. The whole place smelled like heaven. I had a Turtle Mocha and I couldn’t drink it fast enough before going back for another cup.

To summarize, my weekend getaway in Colorado was relaxing and such a great experience for my first time vising the state. Vail was not all that for me but I did enjoy my stay in the area and of course the company of my friend was the best. Next time, I want to stay in Breckenridge. I didn’t want to leave but I had to make the journey back home. Every bit of that area was darling and so beautiful. I would highly recommend for any of y’all to check out Breckenridge specifically. Breckenridge is also next to Frisco which had some stunning water and mountains views when I was driving by it. There were folks out on the lake with boats and tons of activity that I could see. Golden again is not talked about enough but I loved the area. If you are close to Denver go check it out. I would love to visit again.

Thank you for checking out my travel post today. Please comment or reach out to me if you have any questions or want more details on any of the 3 areas I visited in Colorado.
